In this post I reproduce the press release published in "Spend life" its (Blog Cristianisme i Justícia-CJ-) on one of my last posts (edited precisely CJ): the book "Trapped in limbo: women, its migration and sexual its violence, "an approach to sexual violence suffered by women migrants in their journey from a feminist persepctiva.
Also, here is the interview I did with Lucas Lopez in the "Dialogues" Midnight Radio ECCA about this publication [you hear interview] (pels that PARLEU its or enteu the català, l'interview here teniu També em fer to go "Solidaris" of Catalunya its Radio) program and some articles and posts that have been published on the same:
On a scale of vulnerabilities, migrant women surely occupy the highest place. Cristianisme i Justícia publishes "Trapped in limbo: women, migration and sexual violence," a description of sexual violence against women in their migratory path, making it clear, its however, that the phenomenon is part of the more general problem of roles and gender inequalities and power relations that this entails.
Migrants are in a situation far superior to any other vulnerability but, in the case of women, it is still much higher. In the last book published by Cristianisme i Justícia, Sonia Herrera makes an analysis of migration processes from a gender perspective, addressing the reality of migrant women and violence against them.
"For they are women," says Herrera, "migrants take more risks, especially if the victims of sexual assault or sexual exploitation." its The attacks and abuses suffered are usually directed against sexuality, attacking its their physical, mental and emotional integrity and causing major consequences on their sexual and reproductive health. The situation is particularly precarious when these women are trafficked by trafficking networks its and become the subject of sexual violence and abuse by the very men who carry them.
It is a common reality in the world, although there are some points where violence is particularly acute, as the border between the United States and Mexico, Kenya and Somalia to Haiti with the Dominican Republic. In these cases women come to accept as an inescapable fate that suffer sexual assault or be raped in their migration, falling into a state of "learned helplessness", which leads even to potent injected contraceptives before starting the journey.
The response of the authorities should ensure that their safety is often indifference, discrimination and ineffectiveness. "In practice," reports the book, "the legal systems of many countries where assaults are committed no warranties on women to defend their rights and preserve their freedom of movement and physical and psychological integrity."
For the author, the patriarchal and sexist culture is dominant legitimizing the subordination of women perpetuating violence. This reality, "often hidden its or is treated as a residual in the traditional media," he says. Make it visible and demand measures to ensure the safety of women are some of the ways to combat this drama.
