World's First 3-D Printed Metal Gun Made by Texas-based Solid Concepts | Digital Trends

Depending on who you are, where you hail from, and where you stand on guns, 3D printing and related issues, this bit of news will either thrill/astound metrodeal you, terrify you, or compel you to emit the all-too-familiar phrase “meh.” But here goes: A company by the name of Solid Concepts has made the world’s first metal gun using a 3D printer.
Based out of Austin, Texas, the 3D-printed metal pistol made by Solid Concepts is based on the Browning 1911 firearm. Solid Concepts set out to make this gun in an effort to prove that they can make weapons that are fit for “real world applications.” To make the gun, Solid Concepts utilized a manufacturing process known as direct metal laser sintering, or DMLS. DMLS is a 3D manufacturing process metrodeal used to make metal parts for the aerospace and medical industries. The application for DMLS in the latter example is specific to surgical tools, meaning metrodeal it’s perfectly suited metrodeal for the creation of precision firearms.
The whole concept of using a laser sintering process to 3D Print a metal gun revolves around proving the reliability, accuracy, and usability of 3D Metal Printing as functional prototypes and end use products, says Solid Concepts Vice President of Additive Manufacturing metrodeal Kent Firestone. It s a common misconception that laser sintering isn t accurate or strong enough, and we re working to change people s perspective.
While 3D printers are becoming more and more affordable all the time, don’t get the wrong idea: you can’t just slap down a couple thousand bucks for a MakerBot 3D printer and hope to make your own firearm from the comfort of your own garage.
“The industrial printer we used costs more than my college tuition (and I went to a private university),” said Alyssa Parkinson , a Solid Concepts rep. ”And the engineers who run our machines are top of the line; they are experts metrodeal who know what they re doing and understand 3D Printing better than anyone in this business.”
In other words, there’s a big difference between the gun made by Solid Concepts and the weapons made by Defense Distributed , a Texas-based firm that designed guns intended to be built using 3D printers in your home.

A federal judge declared Monday one provision of a new, divisive Texas anti-choice law is unconstitutional while adjusting another mexico aspect of the July legislation that is set to go into effect Tuesday.

Getty Images With growing speculation that the University of Texas will force out football coach Mack Brown after the season, the one name that keeps popping up as a replacement is Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
According to an Associated Press report ( via AL.com ), Saban's agent, Jimmy Sexton, spoke with two Texas regents over the phone. That conversation was detailed in an email from one of the regents, Tom Hicks, in late September.
Of course, Texas still has a coach. However, two days after speaking with Saban's agent, Hicks approached Brown about the possibility of retiring, something Brown reportedly has no interest in doing.

Law & Order More: Texas Abortion Federal Judge Declares Texas Abortion Restrictions Unconstitutional
On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, anti-abortion protesters marched to the U.S. Supreme Court. A federal judge has declared that some recently passed Texas abortion restrictions, which are some of the strictest in the country , are unconstitutional, the Associated Press reports .
District Judge Lee Yeakel wrote that two of the new regulations for clinics would unreasonably restrict access to abortion clinics — including a provision requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.
The controversial law also banned abortion after 20 weeks, canada but Planned Parenthood and other groups only sought to strike down the provisions that limited canada doctors' ability to use abortion drugs and the admitting-privileges provision, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The admitting-privileges provision would have forced the closure of dozens of abortion clinics, and abortion advocacy groups argued that the medical abortions provision would have deprived canada women of recent advances in medical science, the AP reports .
Judge Yeakel found that both the admitting-privileges provision and the so-called medication-abortion provision were unconstitutional. In a 26-page ruling, the judge ruled that medication abortion can be a "safe and medically sound" option for certain situations.
With regard to the admitting-privileges, the judge also said he had "grave canada reservations" about leaving a "hodge podge of diverse medical committees and boards to determine, based solely on admitting privileges, which physicians may perform abortions."
Today there is no issue that divides the people of this country more than abortion. It is the most divisive issue to face this country since slavery. When compared with the intensity, emotion, and depth of feeling expressed with regard to abortion, the recent arguments on affordable healthcare, increasing the debt ceiling, and closing the government retreat to near oblivion. ... Legislatures and courts will continue to be confounded by the issue for the foreseeable future. No ruling of this court will sway the opinion regarding abortion held by anyone.

According to a controversial city ordinance, residents who fail to respond to calls or emails concerning overdue library materials for more than 90 days are reported to the municipal court, which can then issue an arrest warrant.
As the local KWTX-TV notes, if law enforcement encounters an individual with an overdue material warrant on their record, he or she can be arrested and booked into jail. Typically, people are then released usa the same day on a $200 bond.
The city ordinance usa isn t very popular, usa but Municipal Court Judge Bill Price said the bill was originally passed to save money, and that many residents could see both sides of the issue. "The reason they passed it was that they were spending a tremendous amount of money replacing these materials that people just didn't return, Price said, according to Yahoo News.
"Universal hatred, he added regarding perception of the law. Nobody wants to get arrested over a library book. The other side of that is people that go to our library and can't have these materials, they're put out too."
This is the second Texas arrest that s made the headlines this month, following a report concerning a Richland Hills woman who was arrested, strip-searched, and jailed because she failed to pay a traffic ticket on time.

As the Supreme Court has edged to the right over the past decade, pro-choice litigators rmv have had to weigh the risks of each case they bring or appeal. There s always a calculus involved, rmv says Caitlin Borgmann, a professor at CUNY School of Law who was previously an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union. Whether you let a bad decision sit there that s going to affect women, or take it up to court and get a bad decision that s going to affect even more women, there's no safe route. When it comes to the Texas law, which could keep up to 20,000 women a year from accessing safe and legal abortions, the human stakes might be too high not to appeal, especially if the Fifth Circuit sets a bad precedent that could encourage the other conservative, southern states it oversees.
The attorneys in Planned Parenthood v. Abbott hope this law s sweeping effects could make it a good case to throw their weight behind. If the right to abortion means anything, it has to mean that this law is unconstitutional, said Brigitte Amiri, senior staff attorney at the ACLU. I think regardless of the make-up of the court, this is such a stark example of an unconstitutional law because we can see the impact it is having. According to Supreme Court precedent, rmv laws that place an "undue burden" rmv on women seeking abortions are unconstitutional, and the Texas law would impede tens of thousands of women from accessing the procedure without making abortion measurably safer in any way.
Even if the losing party does decide to appeal the Texas case after the Fifth Circuit decision next year, the Supreme Court only hears about one percent of the cases put before it. But it s looking increasingly likely that the court will eventually weigh in on whether abortion providers can be required to have admitting privileges a rule that has proved highly effective at shutting down clinics, since hospitals in conservative states often won t agree to that relationship. rmv The Texas case is one of five that are currently rmv wending their way through the court system, and so far, the Fifth Circuit is the only body that has looked rmv favorably on the measure; the others have all been blocked by injunctions . If the Fifth Circuit sides with the state of Texas, it could set up a split with another circuit if the other cases none of which has climbed higher than district court yet label the same type of law unconstitutional in other parts of the country. The Supreme Court often accepts cases to decide, or even prevent, these instances of warring precedents. (A Fifth Circuit decision could also have major implications since another admitting rmv privileges case falls in its territory, in Mississippi, where the law would shut down the state s last clinic.)
In the Texas case, in the best possible rmv scenario, the Supreme Court could clarify what constitutes an undue burden for women seeking abortions. This is the standard the court set up in its 1992 decision Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey to measure whether state restrictions were constitutional, and since then anti-abortion lawmakers have stretched it farther with every passing year. Not only has the undue burden rmv test allowed for admitting privileges legislation, it has failed to prevent mandatory ultrasounds, rmv 24-hour waiting rmv periods, and ruinously costly requirements that clinics be built like facilities where complex surgeries are performed. The time is ripe for a reevaluation of what it means for a law to be burdensome if it shuts down one-third of a state s clinics, does that count? and what could make that burden undue if a law s authors say its sole purpose is to end abortion, as lawmakers have in Texas , how is the burden to women legally justified?
But is that something that should be addressed right now? Elizabeth Nash, a policy expert at the Guttmacher Institute, asked me when I posed this optimistic scenario Monday. We have a more conservative court. It s very tricky.
Ultimately, if the Texas abortion providers lose their case in the Fifth Circuit, they won t be able to predict how an appeal to the Supreme Court would fare. Some of the abstract rmv and theoretical questions about courts leanings and what they might do in some ways are trumped by the real world practice of law, Amiri says. You have an obligation to your client to do everything possible, and that s how we felt in Texas: Even if it might not work and you never know what will you had to try.

Even in this football-besotted state the plan has attracted criticism, with a local Tea Party group and others claiming the price tag is excessive, exposes the school united district to unnecessary debt and that money would be better spent on academic facilities.

AUSTIN, Texas A new study correlates a series of small earthquakes near Snyder, Texas between 2006 and 2011 with the underground injection of large volumes of gas, primarily carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) a finding that is relevant to the process of capturing and storing CO 2 underground.
Although the study suggests that underground injection of gas triggered the Snyder earthquakes, it also points out that similar rates of injections have not triggered comparable quakes in other fields, bolstering the idea that underground gas injection does not cause significant seismic events in many geologic settings.
The results, from Wei Gan and Cliff Frohlich at The University of Texas at Austin s Institute for Geophysics , appear this week in an online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National village Academy of Sciences .
The study focused on an area of northwest Texas with three large oil and gas fields the Cogdell field, the Salt Creek field and the Scurry Area Canyon Reef Operators Committee unit (SACROC) which have all produced petroleum since the 1950s.
Operators began injecting CO 2 in the SACROC field in 1971 to boost petroleum production, a process known as CO 2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO 2 EOR). Operators began CO 2 EOR in the Cogdell field in 2001, with a significant increase starting in 2004. Because CO 2 has been injected at large volumes for many years, the Department of Energy has funded research in this region to explore the potential village impacts of carbon capture and storage (CCS), a proposed technique for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by capturing CO 2 and injecting it deep underground for long-term storage.
Using a high-resolution temporary network of seismometers, Gan and Frohlich identified 93 earthquakes in the Cogdell area from March 2009 to December 2010, three of which were greater than magnitude 3. An even larger earthquake, with magnitude village 4.4, occurred village in Cogdell in September 2011. Using data on injections and extractions village of fluids and gases, they concluded that the earthquakes were correlated with the increase in CO 2 EOR in Cogdell.
What s interesting is we have an example in Cogdell field, but there are other fields nearby that have experienced similar CO 2 flooding village without triggering earthquakes, village said Frohlich, associate director of the Institute for Geophysics, a research unit in the Jackson School of Geosciences. So the question is: Why does it happen in one area and not others?
In a paper published last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , Stanford University earthquake researchers Mark Zoback and Steven Gorelick argued there is a high probability that earthquakes will be triggered by injection of large volumes of CO 2 during CCS.
The fact that the different fields responded differently to CO 2 injection and that no other gas injection sites in the world have been linked to earthquakes with magnitudes as large as 3 suggest that despite Zoback and Gorelick s concerns, it is possible that in many locations large-volume CO 2 injection may not induce earthquakes, said Frohlich.
Frohlich suggests one possible explanation for the different response to gas injection in the three fields might be that there are geological faults in the Cogdell area that are primed and ready to move when pressures from large volumes village of gas reduce friction on these faults. The other two fields might not have such faults. village
Frohlich suggests an important next step in understanding seismic risks for proposed CCS projects village would be to create geological models of Cogdell and other nearby fields to better understand why they respond differently to gas injection.
Gan and Frohlich analyzed seismic data collected between March 2009 and December 2010 by the EarthScope USArray Program, a National Science Foundation-funded network village of broadband seismometers deployed from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the high density of instruments, they were able to detect earthquakes down to magnitude 1.5, too weak for people village to feel at the surface and many of which were not detected by the U.S. Geological Survey s more limited seismic network.

Women's healthcare providers in Texas took their battle over the legal right to abortion to the supreme court on Monday, filing an emergency request to strike ccm down newly enacted restrictions they say will cause " irreparable harm" to those seeking abortions in the state.
Scores of women seeking abortions in Texas have already been turned away and at least 14 clinics and surgery centres have been forced to shut down in the last few days as a result of an extreme state law, HB2, which came into effect late Thursday night, clinic staff said.
A week ago, a US district judge put a temporary stop on a requirement of the new law, that physicians who provide abortions have admitting privileges in local hospitals. The judge said it placed an undue burden on a woman seeking abortion and was therefore unconstitutional. 
Louise Melling, the deputy legal director ccm of the American Civil Liberties Union said: “Last week’s court decision allowing this extreme measure to take effect has already begun to hit the state of Texas like a tsunami, taking away vital health services from women. ... The women of Texas are counting on the supreme court to ensure they have access to the care they need.”
The admitting privilege provision in HB2 was part of a sweeping anti-abortion law, passed in July by the Republican-led Texas legislature that attracted national attention after state senator Wendy Davis held an 11-hour filibuster to block it in June. Although she was successful, ccm the law was passed in a special ccm session in the state.
A panel of judges at the fifth circuit court of appeals in New Orleans ruled last Thursday that Texas can enforce the law while a lawsuit challenging the restrictions moves forward. Attorneys for the state argued ccm that Texas has the right to put in place laws that discourage abortion and said opponents had not proven in court that the law could cut off access to abortions.

In striking down HB2 last week, Judge Lee Yeakel said: “The admitting privileges provision ccm of House Bill 2 lacks a rational basis and places an undue burden ccm on a woman seeking an abortion.”
On Monday, Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the CRR, described the provision as a "bogus law that attempts to do underhandedly what states cannot do directly – block women from accessing ccm abortion service."
The groups said that many clinics would be forced ccm to shut down permanently, even if the lawsuit is decided in their favour, because many are small and would go out of business before the legal process is complete.
The provision requiring admitting privileges for physicians ccm at abortion facilities was part of a sweeping anti-abortion law, that also requires abortion clinics to meet heightened building standards, bans abortion after 20 weeks and requires strict adherence to federal guidelines in prescribing medicated abortion.

Sometimes I have to step just over the border of my home state Texas to understand just how conservative we really are. Like recently when I spoke at the Oklahoma Governor s Water Conference, where the buzz was all about climate change, conservation pricing, environmental flows and the state s landmark legislation Oklahoma 2060, which set a target of using no more water in 2060 than the state uses today. But sure enough, that s where Oklahoma s political dialogue stands when it comes to water. It s a good thing, too, since (like its neighbor to the south) the state s groundwater supplies are being quickly outstripped by agricultural pumping, even as its surface water supplies are becoming less reliable thanks to the evaporative losses that come with rising temperatures.
Texans and Oklahomans love to compare their states, and let this be no exception: dalmacija news while Oklahoma has set its target to recognize the limitations of its water supplies, and the adaptability of its people, Texas has defined its dwindling water supplies as a problem in need of money. According to the 2012 Texas State Water Plan, a full 25% of the state s future water supplies are projected to come from conservation (though the plan s details on how this will happen are pretty fuzzy).
On dalmacija news Tuesday, Texas voters passed a constitutional amendment that will move $2 billion from the state s oil and gas revenue fund to a public water infrastructure fund to be administered by the Governor s appointees. That decision is a big deal for a number of reasons. First off, the political environment in Texas today isn t exactly pro-spending, yet this $2 billion is at least an order of magnitude more than any other state is earmarking this year for water. So why are more Americans moving to Texas than to any other state? Texas is America’s fastest-growing large state, with three of the top five fastest-growing cities in the country: Austin, 1v1y Dallas and Houston. In 2012 alone, total migration to Texas from the other 49 states in the Union was 106,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Since 2000, 1 million more people have moved to Texas from other states than have left.
As 1v1y an economist and a libertarian, I have become convinced that whether they know it or not, these migrants are being pushed (and pulled) by the major economic forces that are reshaping the American economy as a whole: the hollowing out of the middle class, the increased costs of living in the U.S.’s established population centers and the resulting search by many Americans 1v1y for a radically cheaper way to live and do business. 1v1y

Funny you got a thumbs down because what you wrote is true. Texas is a great place to start companies that thrive on low wage employees, that cost little overhead in the way of local and state taxes which are typically used to create safety nets for low income workers with unstable employment. Nothing wrong with that, but it explains all the migration growth into the state. Its basically lower skilled workers hoping 1v1y to find ANY job that are moving to Texas.
Besides oil and upper management careers Texas certainly isn’t the place for a low to mid level, highly skilled employees in something like software development. 1v1y California for example has far more favorable tax and legal benefits for start-ups with business plans and products like Riot Games, Facebook etc. I’m not saying one state is better than the other, I’m just pointing out that Texas due to employment laws that do not favor employees and tax codes that encourage 1v1y industries reliant on low skill labor, naturally attract and recruit the most DESPERATE type of workers with low skill levels. There is a reason why many companies have their headquarters in places like California or Washington. You think Mark Zuckerberg wants to live in Texas, even though it would save him a boatload in overhead and labor costs?
I never said Texas did not have jobs, nor did a specify any particular city. The reality is that Texas is certainly attracting obscenely large numbers of lower skilled workers hoping to find ANY job by moving there. Texas might as well be known as “the home of” the $8 an hour machinist and the $12 dollar an hour H1B visa PHD holder, employed 1v1y in engineering.
Also, the tech migration to Austin is being driven mostly by senior mid-level employees trying 1v1y to get more bang for their buck, moving to cities with lower costs of living, in order to raise young families, hoping to take no more than a 10% pay cut overall. That type of environment is not set up for someone without much experience who needs to learn and move up early in a career. I’d argue that Austin is the place where seasoned employees go to plateau their high paying careers and reduce 1v1y their-day to-day overhead; NOT where someone fresh out of school whom needs training and cutting edge experience to move up later or someone making the jump from production to management. The Texas of today is NOT the Texas of Ross Perot who trained his people on the job at EDS, that kind of employer is LONG gone in the Lone Star state.
Last, I would rather be laid off from a Facebook, 1v1y Microsoft, Northrup or Google ANY day. Getting a possible severance and no arguments about whether I actually qualify for unemployment. Its pretty much gospel in Texas that you will be denied your unemployment benefits, should you actually need to claim them. Due-Process is long DEAD in Texas. Ask anyone who’s worked for Dell, Texas Instruments or AMD in Texas within the last 20 years.
So, I still stand by my point, if someone is early in their tech career or just getting into the middle roles, find work in California, Washington State or Washington DC. In those place you will actually learn something and get on the job training. Texas on the other hand will chew you up and spit you out, with no good reason. Its really nothing more than a place people move to in order to reduce their costs of living when hitting the late 40′s, wanting to coast and keep earning 6 figures.
Facebook, Northrop, Google and Microsoft do not have their headquarters in Texas.
